"In the 23 years here I've been with Mount Vernon and the three saves that I've been directly involved with, it has always involved public CPR in progress before we arrive and then early defibrillation by first responders like firefighters or EMTs.
We would probably compare early access CPR and early defibrillation to no CPR and early defibrillation is probably 20 to 1 ratio in terms of what I've seen over my career as far as saves go. Occasionally, you'll save or will be involved in saving somebody who hasn't had early access CPR, but they involve chemical conversion of the rhythm. In other words, advanced care by a paramedic, where you say they don't survive."
