Cardiac Science Joins Indiana Insurance's Safety Advantage Network
Loveland, Ohio and Bothell, Wash. – Indiana InsuranceTM, a member of Liberty Mutual Group and the leading insurer of schools throughout the Midwest, and Cardiac Science Corporation, a global leader in advanced cardiac monitoring and defibrillation products, announced today that Cardiac Science is now a member of Indiana Insurance’s Safety Advantage NetworkTM, a group of best-in-class specialists that supplements existing school loss prevention services.
Cardiac Science manufactures PowerheartTM Automated External Defibrillators (AED). This safe, easy-to-use defibrillation technology will be available to schools insured through Indiana Insurance in order to foster Heartsafe learning environments.
The Safety Advantage Network provides schools with access to resources to improve school safety. The resources within the Safety Advantage Network address violence and abuse prevention, employment screening, as well as more common day-to-day school issues such as playground, bleacher, or shop equipment hazards, and medical or facility emergencies.
According to the American Heart Association, 325,000 Americans die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) each year. Approximately five percent of those who suffer SCA outside of a hospital survive. The principal treatment for SCA is a shock from a defibrillator coupled with CPR. Because the chance of survival decreases seven to ten percent with each minute that passes, the best chance of survival occurs if a defibrillator is used within the first few minutes following the SCA. In areas where AEDs are readily accessible in the event of an incident, survival rates have been shown to increase significantly.
San Diego County established a Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program in November 2001, placing AEDs in public places throughout the county. Since then, 74 percent of victims who suffered out-of-hospital SCA in San Diego County have survived.
“Our goal is to educate schools on the risk of SCA in children so that they can be prepared with the proper equipment and training before an incident happens,” said Michael D. Connell, president and chief executive officer, Indiana Insurance. “We know it can take six-to-twelve minutes for EMS to arrive, at which point the chances of survival have diminished significantly. Having readily accessible AEDs on site in schools can be instrumental in saving a life. We believe that Cardiac Science’s Powerheart AED is a valuable addition to our Safety Advantage Network.”
“Indiana Insurance has developed an excellent program to promote safety in schools,” said Garry Norris, vice president of marketing, Cardiac Science. “We applaud them for recognizing the importance of Heartsafe environments for schools, in addition to helping protect students from abuse, school violence, and hazards in the shop or playground and we are pleased that Cardiac Science is now part of the Safety Advantage Network. Young lives can be saved when schools are equipped with AEDs. Earlier this year, a high school wrestler in Ohio survived Sudden Cardiac Arrest after his trainer deployed the school’s Powerheart AED while waiting for paramedics to arrive. It is events like this that underscore the importance of having publicly accessible, user-friendly AEDs in our schools.”
