Talk about an awesome event!
San Diego Project Heart Beat in association with Cardiac Science and the American Red Cross hosted the “final stop” on the CPR Across America’s tour aboard the USS Midway. Ice skating legend and 1968 Olympic gold medalist, PEGGY FLEMING, who lost a sister at age 50 to sudden cardiac arrest, joined the U.S.S. Midway event, signing autographs and cheering on the hundreds of attendees at this mass CPR-training event. CPR ACROSS AMERICA is a national campaign to teach hands-only CPR in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of this life-saving skill.
James V. Dunford MD, Medical Director (EMS) for the City of San Diego, wrote us, saying: “This was a very special moment in San Diego’s storied history of building a better regional cardiovascular healthcare system for the 21st century. I can’t thank everyone enough for giving their talent and time to make our city and region shine. I was told by a CPR Across America official that they were astonished by the degree to which San Diego could to bring key stakeholders together to accomplish what we did.”
All our special guests conveyed extremely powerful comments.
- I was moved by Peggy Fleming’s message of the importance of caring for one’s self and family and turning tragedy into strength. I think her presence catalyzed the whole day.
- San Diego Fire-Rescue Chief Javier Mainar eloquently conveyed the need for citizens to understand their vital role in the Chain of Survival.
- American Red Cross CEO Joe Craver hit the mark in describing the importance of the day, and UCSD cardiologist Dr. Ori-Ben-Yahuda’s reflections validated everything we are doing when he shared a story about how the highly successful SDPHB PAD program at the Sheraton Harbor Island had saved multiple lives and transformed hospital physician’s awareness of the potential of AEDs.”
