More than 500 Steele Canyon High School students received free cardiac screenings, thanks to the family of Eric Paredes.
Cardiac Science was proud to be involved Saturday at the first-ever cardiac screening for students at Steele Canyon High School in San Diego. More than 500 teens took advantage of free cardiac screenings, thanks to the generosity of the family of the late Eric Paredes.
Eric, a 15-year-old two-sport athlete at Steele Canyon, died tragically last summer of sudden cardiac arrest. His father, Hector Paredes, found Eric unconscious and not breathing on the floor of the kitchen in the family’s home. He administered CPR, but was not able to revive his son.
Eric had never shown any indication of a cardiac condition, so he’d never had the testing that would have revealed that he had an enlarged heart. In Eric’s memory, his family organized electrocardiogram (EKG) screening for other students at Steele Canyon.
Fourteen of the students tested with an EKG were recommended to have additional testing (an echo-cardiogram), and one of those students was referred to a doctor.
The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association, Scripps Health, and San Diego Project Heart Beat all helped the Paredes family coordinate the Aug. 28 screening. Cardiac Science loaned the 12-lead resting ECG monitors and supplies available for the screening, and we joined in the concurrent community health fair with San Diego Project Heartbeat, the California Highway Patrol, and the local fire department to help educate and raise awareness within the community. The 10News.com site has a great video of the event.
Paredes family, which has set up the Eric Paredes Save a Life Foundation, is hoping to offering screenings at other area high schools. You can contact our San Diego AED Specialist Enrique Christopherson for information to get AEDs in your school.
