Cardiac Science for the week of June 7: EMR market growth

Heart Safe news: Our weekly update on what’s happening in the world of heart safety and noninvasive cardiology

New study predicts growth in EMR market

A study released by GlobalData predicts that the electronic medical records (EMR) market will see compound annual growth of 15 percent over the next seven years. EMR is the largest segment of the (HIS) hospital information systems market, for which the report forecasts rapid growth.

In an article about the proprietary study, Healthcare IT News reports that incentives provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are expected to dramatically increase the use of electronic information systems in physician practices and hospitals.

Through the combined efforts of Welsh Ambulance Service, Snowdown Mountain Railway, an automated external defibrillator (AED) is now available at the highest point in Wales, Hafod Eryri atop Mount Snowdon.

The National Public Access Defibrillator Scheme (PADs) program trained staff of the railway, Snowdonia National Park Authority Warden, and Llanberis Mountain Rescue volunteers.

Clive Setter of AED Locator told the North Wales News: “It will be reassuring for all the tens of thousands of people who visit the summit of Snowdon as well as the dedicated staff that an extra layer of emergency assistance is being provided when a cardiac arrest is suspected.”

Police officer with defibrillator in patrol car saves a life

An 80-year-old man walking the Rail Trail in Vestal, N.Y., collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest last week but was revived by a town police officer using an AED. An employee for a nearby businesss and the town’s parks director witnessed the incident, called 911, and began CPR. A town police officer arrived to find the man without a pulse. He used the automated external defibrillator (AED) in his patrol car, which administered a shock that restarted the man’s heart.

“The machine was working very well,” Police Chief John Butler told Pressconnect.com, the news website for the Binghamton, N.Y. area. He reported that the police offer later spoke by phone with the survivor, who was at the regional medical center.

All Vestal patrol cars are equipped with defibrillators, the police chief said.
