A study published last month in the European Heart Journal said that many European sports arenas are ill-equipped to deal with cardiac events that may strike spectators, players, or officials.
Researchers surveyed 187 sports arenas in 10 countries that played host to 190 football (soccer) clubs. During the 2005-2006 season when the study was conducted, 77 spectators suffered cardiac events.
At that time, more than one-quarter of the stadiums were without automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and some had no CPR training programs.
The student concluded that the need for recommendations for heart safety standards was urgent, according to a report in MedWire News.
“We believe that formal recommendations are needed urgently to improve safety for spectators and players. At the highest levels of sport, recommendations should be mandatory,” said Mats Borjesson of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. The study was conducted by researchers from the U.K., Germany, Spain, Norway and Italy.
The study noted that the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Physicians (NAEMSP) in the U.S. recommends a medical action plan (MAP), including AEDs, as a blueprint for delivering emergency medical care at events with more than 1000 people present.
“On the contrary, no recommendations regarding acute cardiovascular care at sports arenas exist at present in Europe, and the current implementation of medical action plans (including AEDs) in major continental sports arenas is largely unknown,” the study says.
