The Oregon legislature passed a bill Feb. 24 requiring automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in all Oregon schools by 2015. Senate Bill 1033 received Governor Ted Kulongoski’s signature for action on March 10.
The law, which was sponsored by State Senator Jason Atkinson (pictured), applies to public, private and public charter school campuses. It requires at least one AED on each campus by Jan. 1, 2015.

OregonLive.com reported that State Representative Sherrie Sprenger spoke to House colleagues in support of the bill, telling them about her nephew who died of a heart problem while at school — a death that might have been prevented if an AED had been available.
