House approves healthcare bill; builds on meaningful use of healthcare IT
The House voted Sunday to approve the Senate healthcare reform package, introducing a new era of healthcare — one that relies heavily on healthcare IT.
An article on the InformationWeek website points out that the healthcare reform package builds on the $20 billion HITECH stimulus funding, passed last year to provide incentives to physicians and hospitals to make “meaningful use” of electronic medical records (EMR). InformationWeek’s Marianne McGee writes:
“The use of those technologies can not only squeeze out inefficient and costly paper-shuffling between and among patients, healthcare providers and insurers, those system can facilitate improved coordination of care, red-flag potential mistakes and problems, and boost quality of care.”
Michigan woman campaigns for AEDs after her husband’s rescue
Lisa Poel’s husband Randy, a sergeant with the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest while playing hockey Feb. 21. Fortunately, the arena where he was playing had an automated external defibrillator (AED). Nathan Morgan, a firefighter who was at the arena when Poel was stricken, used that AED to restore Poel’s heartbreak. Taken by ambulance to a local hospital, Poel has since recovered from his brush with death.
“If it wasn’t for the AED and Nate Morgan, the doctors said that 100 percent, beyond a doubt, my husband would’ve died,” Lisa Poel told the Muskegon News.
She is now campaigning in the community to raise money that will enable the Public Safety Department to equip more locations in the Grand Haven community with defibrillators.
According to the news report, the arena’s AED was a donation from a customer who thought it was important for the sports venue to be equipped with one.
Custodian to get Workplace Hero award for Nevada AED rescue
The victim was a supervisor who collapsed at work at the State of Nevada’s Computer Facility Feb. 18. The rescuer was Peggy Willis, a contracted custodian who spotted the man slumped over his desk.
“Peggy had the presence of mind and emotional strength to gather up several employees to perform CPR while she went for the facility’s AED. Following the AEDs directions, she applied the paddles and voltages to Dennis’ body,” Kevin Baily, Willis’ supervisor, told the Nevada Appeal. “Ms. Willis’ deliberate and heroic action brought Dennis back to life.”
Willis is scheduled to receive the Workplace Hero award from the Northern Nevada American Red Cross on Thursday. Contact Nevada AED Specialist Jonathan Rittenburg for how you can make your facility heartsafe.
