Susan Howard, principal of Lowell Elementary School in Indianapolis, is alive today because her colleagues had quick access to an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Howard, 58, collapsed during a staff meeting on Wednesday morning.
When co-workers rushed to her aid, Howard was unresponsive. Her colleagues could not detect a pulse.
Two teachers quickly retrieved one of the school’s portable AED units and were able to successfully apply the training they had received on how to use the device.
Howard regained a pulse after receiving the life-saving shock.
Subsequently, doctors determined that Howard had suffered a ventricular fibrillation. Had it not been for the close proximity of the AED, she would have lost her life.
The principal’s husband, Mike Howard, has stated that his wife’s rescue is a testament to the devices’ value.
