Yuma, Arizona, city officials honor golf pro Rich Walton, who used CPR and a Powerheart AED to revive a golfer who suffered sudden cardiac arrest
The city of Yuma, Arizona, recognized Rich Walton, the golf pro at the city’s Desert Hills Golf Course, for using a Powerheart automated external defibrillator at the clubhouse to revive a 60-year-old man who had collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest after playing a round of golf. Walton, who had been received AED training from the city, administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation and attached the AED to the victim.
The city reported that the AED delivered a shock, and that paramedics arrived to find “the patient was again breathing and shortly regained consciousness” and was able to talk with fire department personnel. The golfer was transported to an area hospital, and was later discharged.
“The CPR that was being performed by the victim’s companions, the availability of the AED, and Rich Walton’s quick actions all combined to save a life,” city officials reported.
Cardiac Science AED expert Jonathan Rittenburg attended the Jan. 20 ceremony honoring Walton.
“I’ve worked with officials in the city of Yuma and other in other Arizona counties, cities, and towns to make city buildings, schools, and recreation facilities like Desert Hills ‘heart safe,’” Rittenburg said. “This is a great example of what happens when cities install AEDs and people like Rich Walton get AED trained and educated — a life-threatening situation turns into a life saved.”
