The Terre Haute International Airport has installed three automated external defibrillators, a gift from local businesses Wabash Valley Asphalt and NGC Corp. The firms donated three Powerheart AED G3s to the airport, where between 100 and 150 travelers pass through every day. The donation includes AED training for all airport staff, conducted by a Cardiac Science representative.
“It’s a great addition to the airport,” Airport Director Dennis Wiss told WTHITV.com in Terre Haute.
TribStar.com reported that Wabash Valley Asphalt, one of the contractors involved in runway renovation at the airport, heard that the airport was looking into obtaining AEDs and made the donation.
The airport story:
At nearby Indiana State University, 20 Powerheart AED G3s have been installed on campus, updating and expanding the university’s existing AED program.
Safety officials at the university were well aware of the protection provided by AEDs. In 2008, the director of ISU’s music business program collapsed from cardiac arrest in his office.
Fortunately, his wife, also a professor in the music department, was there when he collapsed, and called the university’s public safety dispatcher.
An officer with a squad car equipped with an AED arrived and used the AED to administer a shock. The professor needed a second shock while being transported by ambulance to the hospital. The professor underwent surgery to receive an implantable defibrillator, and is now back teaching at ISU.
