When you think about a county fairs and farming expos, you think about homemade pie, tractor demonstrations, and livestock shows. And, nowadays, you also think about a new piece of farm business equipment: The automated external defibrillator (AED).
At the ninth annual Willamette Valley Ag Expo Nov. 17-19, fair-goers will hear from Dale Wagasuki, the sales manager for Wilson Orchard and Nursery Supply. Wagasuki, who suffered sudden cardiac arrest and was saved by a teenager who used an AED, is now an AED distributor. Defibrillation is now on the radar for Oregon businesses, including farm businesses, as a result of new Oregon AED legislation mandating defibrillators for businesses with 25 or more people AND with a facility of 50,000 square feet or more where people gather. The new law goes into effect in 2010.
Wilson’s array of defibrillators includes the fully automatic Cardiac Science Powerheart AED G3.
“Once you put the pads on, a voice prompts you through every step,” Wagasuki told CapitalPress.com, a website covering agriculture in the Western states.
The American Red Cross Oregon chapters are helping state businesses get up to speed with of free seminars this fall on “Building Your AED Program.” They will include an overview of the new legislation, liability issues, and Good Samaritan laws covering AED use, along with demonstrations of AEDs from manufacturers including Cardiac Science.

“new Oregon AED legislation mandating defibrillators for businesses with 25 or more people or with a facility of 50,000 square feet or more”
Just a point of clarification, it’s actually 25 or more people AND 50k or more square feet. Your business has to meet both thresholds before an AED is required.

Only public schools and places of worship are exempt. The legislation states “At least 25 people congregate on a normal business day.”
