Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell signed a bill into law that helps improve access to automated external defibrillators (video below).
Senate Bill 981 was inspired by the 2007 sudden cardiac death of 15-year-old Larry Pontbriant after he collapsed during an annual race.
“Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time, anywhere. You know our son was someone who was very – he was only 15 – very athletic. There was no indication that something like this would happen,” said Larry’s mother, Evelyn Pontbriant. (Click to enlarge the photo at top. That’s Larry’s father, Lawrence Pontbriant, holding the new Connecticut AED law in the air.)
Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell said, “I am very sorry for your loss and I know that this entire school shares the pain of what you’ve gone through, but also the joy of what you’ve done to honor and to remember your son.”
All schools must have an AED on site by July 1. There’s a loophole though. Click here to read what Connecticut AED Law Expert Doug Comstock has to say about that.
