What better places than educational institutions to seed awareness about sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and how to rescue its victims?
That’s why the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation has launched a multi-media awareness campaign for schools, complete with website and the mini-magazine You Can Save a Life at School.
“If we are able to foster growth of a new generation of people who are ready, willing, and able to help in sudden cardiac emergencies, we will be able to make a positive long-term impact on survival from the nation’s leading cause of death,” said Mary Newman, SCA Foundation president.
The magazine features the heart-wrenching story of high school classmates Kaitlin Forbes and Maggie O’Malley. Both young athletes were struck by cardiac arrest; one was saved through timely use of an AED; the other, tragically, died. You can see the video we shot when we met Kaitlin and her family last year.
Through the new SCA Foundation campaign, students will learn about the need for placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools, along with CPR/AED training, and in-school cardiac screening. The program materials include information on model heart safety programs and a video contest, using the SCA Foundation’s YouTube channel, for students who would like to win an AED for their schools or athletic programs.
Cardiac Science is proud to be a sponsor of the new SCA Foundation campaign. Other industry sponsors include Boston Scientific, Health & Safety Institute, Louis J. Acompora Foundation, Physio-Control, Inc., School Health Corporation, St. Jude Medical Foundation and ZOLL Medical Corporation. Other program partners include the CARE Foundation, Gregory W. Moyer Defibrillator Fund, HCMA, Parent Heart Watch, Project Adam, Project S.A.V.E., SADS Foundation, and Take Heart America.
If you would like to receive a free copy of the campaign materials, please contact the SCA Foundation at info@sca-aware.org.
