At the time, Kaitlin was a senior at Rhinebeck Central High School. She was very much a "normal teenager." There was absolutely no reason to suspect that she'd be stricken with sudden cardiac arrest right there on first base during practice.
Her survival is due in large part to the school and school district which had the foresight to equip their school with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the school.
The students, the school nurse, the physician education instructors, the Rhinebeck Police Department and local emergency responders all played a part. Watch her incredible story.
